According to 90min, Manchester United and Barcelona are nearing a conclusion on a deal involving their top transfer target Frenkie de Jong.

When Erik ten Hag was appointed as the new manager of United last month, De Jong was listed as his top target, and talks had been ongoing for a while.

The two clubs have already agreed on the general terms of a transaction that will be worth about €80 million in total after talks made good progress over the weekend and continued into the early part of this week.

The agreement will probably include a guaranteed sum of €65 million (£56 million), plus any add-ons necessary to bring the transfer up to Barcelona’s asking price. Barcelona has informed United that they hope to conclude the transaction by July 1st.

Payments to De Jong and his Barcelona-based agent are one hurdle delaying the deal’s conclusion, albeit it is almost entirely handled.

United is hoping that De Jong would sign with the team soon and travel with them to Thailand and Australia for their preseason trip. The group left on July 8.

Ten Hag and De Jong expressed a desire to collaborate once more on May 12 in an interview with 90min, and it is thought that Ten Hag’s presence at Old Trafford had a significant role in De Jong’s decision to depart.

Prior to focusing on other transfer targets, namely Ajax winger Antony, United wanted to finalize the De Jong acquisition.

The club is also considering the possibility of bringing in a new center back, and both Lisandro Martinez and Pau Torres are on their want list.

Christian Eriksen, a free agent, has also been extended a contract in hopes that he will accept and sign with United after his contract with Brentford expires.
