England vs Austria Women's EURO preview Where to watch

Everything you need to know about the England vs. Austria UEFA Women's EURO 2022 first match.

Hosts England meet Austria at Old Trafford in the opening game of UEFA Women's EURO 2022 on Wednesday 6 July.

The 13th UEFA Women's EURO has been a long time coming, but it is finally here.

Hopes are high for the hosts England, who have frequently made it to the tournament but have not yet won it all. Sarina Wiegman is their head coach, and she led the Netherlands to victory in 2017 on home soil.

Although Austria's pedigree is inferior, they stunned many observers by making it to the final four on their debut five years ago, and they'll be hoping to do the same at Old Trafford;

they did not make it easy for England in November's FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier in Sunderland, losing 1-0 to an Ellen White goal.

Since Sarina Wiegman took over, England has gone unbeaten in 14 games. They recently defeated Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland with ease, and it's difficult to imagine Austria stopping them at Old Trafford.

For the Women's EURO curtain-raiser, Wiegman should play her best starting line-up.

On the wings, expect Lauren Hemp and Beth Mead to be unstoppable, and the developing Millie BrightAlex Greenwood center-back combination to be tough.

Austria were outstanding in qualifying, and the feeling in the camp is that this team is even better than the one that reached the semi-finals five years ago.

Austria is versatile and has a nice balance of youth and experience, but history is not on their side in this opening match they have lost seven of their last seven games against England.

England Last six games all wins Switzerland 0-4 England, 3006 Women's EURO 2017 semi-finals ( 0-3 vs Netherlands)

Austria Last six games 5 wins 1 loss Belgium 0-1 Austria, 2606 Women's EURO 2017 semi-finals (0-0, 0-3 pens vs Denmark)

Sarina Wiegman, England coach It’s really incredible, really exciting.

Irene Fuhrmann, Austria coach It's a really cool feeling. I'm so excited to be part of the opening game.

We worked very hard and [with a lot of] intensity, and we're hoping for a very good performance.

I think, without a doubt, England will dominate the game but we want to make it as hard for them as possible.

Leah Williamson, England captain I'm very proud. We know how big a moment it is. We know what to expect and pressure is a privilege.

Everything's branded for the EURO and you just realise it's about to get going.

England, home stadium, sold-out opening match... They'll probably start off by pressing us very hard and aggressively.
