Liverpool vs Crystal Palace 2-0 Post Match Analysis 3 things we learnt as Liverpool seal first pre-season win in Singapore
Tuesday's devastating 4-0 loss to Manchester United in Thailand gave the Reds additional cause for celebration today after totally overpowering the lackluster Eagles of Patrick Vieira.
For this game, Klopp started with an eleven-man lineup made up of senior players, and after just 12 minutes, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson scored with a calm finish into the far corner after coming late inside the penalty area.
Although Klopp completely altered his lineup for the second half, the Reds' progress continued. After a quick one-two with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right, Mohamed Salah fired a shot that Vicente Guaita spilled over the goal line thanks to a deflection from Joachim Andersen.
Here are 3 things we learnt from the match played in front of a capacity crowd at the Singapore National Stadium
1. Harvey Elliott has a big role to play
Henderson may have scored the sole goal of the first half, but Harvey Elliott was the real star. With a quick spin just inside the right side of the penalty, the 19-year-old created himself a yard of space before cutting the ball back for Henderson, who was unmarked, to fire and score.
Before he was substituted at the break, Elliott raced clear onto a through ball but miscued his shot into the stands behind the goal. Klopp’s system relies primarily on functional midfielders who who shift the ball wide to the full-backs in order for them to then create goalscoring opportunities, but Elliott offers a level of ingenuity and technique on the ball in attacking positions which make a direct threat of his own.
Before suffering a serious ankle injury away at Leeds United last season, the former Fulham midfielder started the season as the first choice on the right side of the midfield three. Based on his preseason performance, it appears he may have a similar significant role to play at the start of the upcoming season..
2. Alex Oxlade-chances Chamberlain's could be hampered by injury.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was another player who stood out in the first half. The 28-year-old, who began the game alongside Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz on the right side of the front three, was perhaps a little out of place, but he was collaborating well with those around him and attempting to make runs over the shoulders of Palace defenders before suffering a hamstring injury that forced his removal just before halftime..
3. Darwin Nunez will need time to adapt to Liverpool, and vice-versa
Since Klopp took over as manager seven years ago, Liverpool has never routinely played with a typical striker in their side. But with Darwin Nunez joining from Benfica to take Sadio Mane's position, it's possible that the Reds may play most of this season's games with an outright number nine.
The Uruguayan came on at half-time and aside from seeing a shot saved by Guaita and missing his kick after cut-back was deflected just in front of him, the 22-year-old was very quiet.
Like everyone else, he is only participating in preseason games while preparing for the season by increasing his level of fitness. It was amazing to see how he frequently made runs that his teammates failed to see and missed passes that his teammates believed to be a near certainty.
Numerous times, players like Mohamed Salah attempted to play a short ball into Nunez in an effort to get it back in more space. However, Nunez was seeking to be passed in behind, therefore the ball was lost since the two players had opposite intentions.
