In light of the interest in signing Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, Manchester United's chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough have been seen in Barcelona.

De Jong has been identified by United as their top summer transfer target. While Barcelona and United have agreed to a base transfer fee for the 25-year-old, the deal has stalled in recent weeks as a result of Barcelona owing De Jong £17 million in back pay after the player agreed to such measures during the COVID pandemic.

On Monday, 90min highlighted the difficulties impeding the deal and revealed that De Jong is still open to coming to Old Trafford despite recent reports to the contrary.

Suggestions a deal is still being worked on have had a very public boost on Monday afternoon, as images of Murtough and Arnold meeting Barcelona officials emerged on social media.

It's believed that vice president Rafa Yuste, director of football Mateu Alemany, and former United player Jordi Cruyff—newly promoted in a crucial position at Barcelona earlier in 2022—were present.

The meeting party was seen after a discussion at the Barcelona headquarters, with De Jong's move presumably the subject of discussion considering that there are currently no known negotiations between the two clubs.

De Jong returned to preseason practice with Barcelona on Monday, but questions over his future remain. This week, Barcelona hopes to decide on De Jong's future while simultaneously finalizing agreements for some of its own transfer targets.
