James Edward Cleveland (December 5, 1931 – February 9, 1991) was a prominent figure in the American gospel music scene. A singer, musician, and composer, Cleveland is often referred to as the "King of Gospel" due to his immense contribution to the genre.

He is credited with helping to create the modern gospel sound by blending traditional black gospel with elements of soul, pop, and jazz. This made his music more accessible and palatable for mass choirs, which in turn helped to popularize gospel music.

Cleveland first came to prominence as an arranger, helping the Caravans score their earliest hits with songs like "Old Time Religion" and "Solid Rock." He also founded his own group, the Gospel Chimes, which helped showcase his talents as a composer, arranger, and singer. Cleveland passed away from heart failure on February 9, 1991, in Los Angeles, California.
