The TOS-1A is an improved version of the original TOS-1 heavy flamethrower system. It was adopted by the Russian Army in 2001. Sometimes this systems is nicknamed the "Solntesepek". The TOS-1A was first used by the Russian Army in Chechnya. Some sources report that this system was used during Russian military aggression in Ukraine in 2014. It was widely used during the following Russian invasion to Ukraine in 2022. This heavy flamethrower system has been exported to Armenia (6), Azerbaijan (18), Iraq (4) and Kazakhstan (3). Algeria reportedly ordered a number of these systems. A small batch of these systems is in service with Saudi Arabia. Iraqi systems have seen combat during the fights with Islamic State fighters. The TOS-1A was used during the Syrian Civil War. In 2020 Armenian and Azerbaijani systems were used during a military conflict between the countries. In 2022 Saudi Arabia used its systems against Houthi rebels. In 2022 the TOS-1A was spotted in Tajikistan.
