UFC was founded in 1993. From then to now, UFC lovers are stunned to see how wonderfully the championship has flourished in the past three decades. Back then, it was often considered a barbaric sport among the citizens, but later it gained more popularity and got streamed on even ESPN, considered the biggest network of all time. Critics were also not very kind to UFC. Some like Senator John McCain called the sport mere “human cockfighting.” Gladly, it is not viewed with such low esteem these days. UFC has got a lot of love from fans worldwide. If you are also a fan of UFC, you must know some fun facts about the sport. We have covered the points and more related to the most brutal UFC fights in today’s guide. So stay hooked until the end!
THE HISTORY OF UFC FIGHTS
UFC was launched in 1993 as an MMA (mixed martial arts) organization and was responsible for the fight business worldwide. UFC’s history goes back to the Greek Olympics Games event held in 648 BC. Around 80 years ago, UFC started becoming popular; most of its credit goes to the special form of MMA called Vale Tudo. From then, UFC started conducting MMA tournaments in the US. A one-night tournament was held to decide who is the “Ultimate Fighting Champion” among the most skilled fighters participating in various martial arts. MMA was organized as a more controlled sport in January 2001 under the supervision of Dana White, Zuffa, Frank Fertitta III, and so on.
The UFC has undergone a remarkable journey in the past or now, and we love it! Currently, UFC has its headquarters in Las Vegas and its offices in other countries worldwide. As per the current reports, UFC events are broadcasted in more than 165 countries with around 60 global broadcast partners. And now, with the rise of digital media, in 2013, UFC launched UFC Fight Pass, a digital platform where UFC live events are hosted. In addition, in 2015, UFC partnered with the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency). It also partnered with the Cleveland Clinic, which was extended in February 2016.
CRAZY MOMENTS IN UFC FIGHTS
Now it’s time to unleash the five crazy facts or moments UFC lovers have experienced in the past few years. Have a look below to learn more about the hilarious facts about the best UFC fights ever:
Back then, weight division was not a thing. There was a 200-pound weight difference between the two athletes in the first match. Right now, such a huge weight difference would be unfair to the athletes, but then there was no such rule, and people hardly cared about the athlete’s weight. The match that we are talking about was held in the quarterfinals bout. In this match, Teila Tuli of the 400-pound weight fought against 200-point Gerard Gordeau, which is unfair to the current UFC rules.
UFC might be super popular today, but they were not so grand back in time. Reportedly, in UFC 4, the broadcast was stopped after their time limit got over. UFC purchased around two hours to stream their program, but the match continued even after two hours. However, the channel started streaming the next program without caring about the unfinished event of the UFC. Imagine what would happen if the same happens today when UFC has become a household name for MMA lovers!
When UFC was new, they were less experienced, so it was hard for them to determine the show time. For instance, a match between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock continued without a win for more than 30 minutes. Seeing this, the organizers decided to give them five more minutes and see who grabbed the winning trophy, but that too failed because nobody won the match, and it was declared a draw.
Now you cannot imagine a match where the rules get broken but what if we told you there was no such strict implementation of the UFC rules back in time. For instance, if we take the match of Joe Son and Keith Hackney, we will see that Hackney had attacked with more than one groin shot even when it was not permitted according to the rules.
In the current UFC scenario, we all know that there is a panel of judges to decide the winner when there’s a draw. But you will be surprised to learn that such a system did not exist in the past UFC matches. Usually, when there was a draw, huge chaos would occur among the fans, which would be the end. Thank god it improved later, and now we have a panel of experts as the jury members!
