Few fictional characters have captured the public imagination quite like Philo Vance.

First introduced in the novel "The Benson Murder Case" by S.S. Van Dine, Vance was a dapper, intellectual sleuth who solve crimes through a combination of keen observation and expert deduction.

Over the years, Vance has been portrayed by some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Warren William, William Powell, and James Mason. However, it was perhaps on radio that Vance found his greatest success.

Three different series were created with Vance as the lead character, and each one enjoyed a loyal following. The first series, broadcast by NBC in 1945, starred José Ferrer as Vance.

A summer replacement series in 1946 starred John Emery in the title role. The last series, which aired on CBS in 1947, featured Edgar Barrier as Vance and Jackson Beck. Throughout all three series, listeners were captivated by Vance's sophisticated investigative methods and his unflappable demeanor.

Even today, more than seventy years after his first appearance, Philo Vance remains one of radio's most enduring and beloved characters.
