The Marcus Aurelius Quote That Changed My Life

The first time I heard about Marcus Aurelius was probably in history class at high-school.

At the time, I didn’t know or (unfortunately) care who he was, I was just trying to pass my exams. Those are the perils of modern education but, that’s another topic for another day.

The Marcus Aurelius that is talked about in my history books from high-school, wasn’t described in depth and what his character was. We only had to know his achievements and conquerings.

He was considered to be the epitome of Plato’s ideal of the philosopher-king.

A leader who did not want to be a leader but continued being a leader regardless. Considered as the last of the good emperors of Rome, his death ushered in a slow decline of the Empire and its eventual collapse.
Marcus was a stoic in every sense of the word. Every night he would write down his thoughts into a journal for his own reflection to help improve himself as a leader, father and citizen.

These thoughts were never supposed to see the light of day, but thankfully, they did. They now comprise the published book, Meditations, which is an invaluable resource that anyone committed to personal growth must read.
The book is a window into the mind of a man who, two-thousand years ago, was the most powerful man on the planet. I found this book during a low point in my life, and it helped me pull myself up.

One quote struck me and stuck with me, to the point that, I am thinking of tattooing it on my body.
