Having dinner at home

I wouldn't suggest saying that "I came out for dinner," as the wording implies that one is "coming out of the closet" in modern English.
Rather, you could say that "I'm grabbing dinner with friends tonight" or "A few friends and I are going out to dinner" or "Tonight a couple friends and I are getting dinner together" or any variations thereof.
