"You are touching the labrum causing your shoulder pain". What? Teenage boy told this from surgeon.

I recently treated a 17 year hold who had shoulder region pain for 2 years. He couldn't take it anymore and three months ago saw an orthopedist who recommended an MRI; of course. A labral tear was identified as the cause of the shoulder region pain. During the evaluation he touched the front of his shoulder and said this is where he was experiencing his pain. The surgeon replied by saying "You are touching your labrum that is why it hurts there". Then followed up to tell him to have physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder to make the pain go away.

I am not sure which part of that story I am more repulsed by; the fact that the surgeon said you can feel your labrum or that stabilizing muscles will resolve pain from a tear. Both reek of lunacy. So for the past 3 months the boy has been doing what he was told in therapy and sure enough he is not one iota better.

So beyond the insane surgeon making this absurd claims, where is the physical therapist who thinks he/she is strengthening muscles to stabilize a tear eliciting pain? Was an evaluation performed at the beginning of therapy to confirm or refute the referring physician's diagnosis? Of course not. You know why? Because this whole debacle is paid for by a fee for service system. So outcome has no impact on getting paid. So neither of the participants in this charade have any concern about the boy having his pain resolved. They get paid for simply showing up. That's why after 3 months of treatment not one person has called into question the diagnosis or the treatment as possibly being complete false.

Enter the Yass Method; the sanctuary of sanity. Number one, the kid could not have been touching the labrum as it is on the inside of the shoulder joint and can't be touched. Secondly he was touching his bicep tendon which was confirmed when I pressed on it and he went through the roof. In just about 30 seconds I could confirm the diagnosis provided by the surgeon and the MRI as false. Next for anyone who looks logic matters, if a tear causes pain then the only thing that would not cause pain is no tear. That means only surgery would resolve pain from a labral tear if pain were coming from a labral tear. It was clear the tear identified, as in most cases, is a degenerative tear and is not eliciting pain at all therefore requiring no intervention.

A complete physical evaluation which is at the core of the Yass Method evaluation showed the kid has a severe rotator cuff strain and other muscles that stabilize the shoulder blade to the rib cage were strained. As a result, the head of the upper arm bone would rise when the boy raised his arm cause it to impact the space between the top of the head of the upper bone and the bottom of the shoulder blade bone that hangs over the shoulder joint. Since the biceps tendon runs through this area, it was pinched causing it to elicit pain. In fact, the labral tear was also the result of the faulty bone mechanics when the head of the upper arm rose pinching off the labrum and leading to a deteriorative tear. This is why the biceps tendon was so tender to touch and why he had pain moving the shoulder into certain positions.

Resolution comes from strengthening the appropriate muscles including the rotator cuff and shoulder blade stabilizing muscles. The boy was able to move his shoulder with much greater ease and less pain after just one bout of treatment.

If this scenario sounds like something similar to what you have gone through, now you understand why you are still suffering with pain. At some point you have to realize going to someone who does surgery for a living and only identifies things that they can do surgery on as the cause of your pain may lead to misdiagnosis. The Yass Method interprets the body's presentation of symptoms to identify the tissue in distress.

In more than 98% of cases, the cause is muscular. These types of causes do not show up on diagnostic tests nor is there any medical specialty educated or trained to identify them. Get the right diagnosis and the right treatment through the Yass Method and reclaim your life.
