Sleep is an important part of our daily lives, necessary for our everyday functioning. We sleep to rest, restore energy, and recover from the day’s challenges. Sleep is also vital for our physical, mental, social-emotional health. It is necessary for our well-being, but the number of people who are not getting enough sleep has increased over the years.
Sleep deprivation is becoming a bigger problem in today's world where people are constantly on their smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. The Internet has become an extension of our bed.
The first step to solving this problem is recognizing that you have it. Identifying your sleep problems can be difficult because there are so many different types of sleep disorders. Some common ones are obstructive sleep apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness which cause insomnia or interrupted sleep cycles.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder where you have severe pauses in breathing while sleeping because the airway has been blocked either from the tongue blocking the air passage or because of excess tissue in the throat area. These disruptions can cause you to snore loudly and also lead to a form of daytime fatigue where people struggle to stay awake during the day for work or school.
The symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are snoring and pauses in breathing during sleep. If untreated it can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness and other difficulties such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
Some people experience excessive daytime sleepiness.
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) can be caused by inadequate or unrefreshing sleep at night as well as inadequate daytime naps.
EDS symptoms include: difficulty concentrating; fatigue; headache; lack of energy; irritability; and mood changes.
Sleep deprivation can have negative effects on both physical and mental health. A lack of sufficient restful slumber can cause weight gain, obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack and even diabetes to happen more often than they would otherwise be expected to happen if they were not deprived.
