The famous cheetah coalition known as Tano Bora/Fast Five/Five Musketeers are always going to provide a special sighting and this case was even more amazing than usual.
We found the cheetah coalition when we noticed the hyenas milling around, at first there was nothing unusual about the sighting until movement in the grass alerted us to the fact that there were SIX cheetah present. The sixth cheetah was the Nashipai female and she had been surrounded by the five males and they were not going to let her go. Typically when a cheetah coalition finds a receptive female cheetah they will all attempt to impress her until she selects a partner. There may be fighting within the coalition at this point, there will also be aggression between them and the female as they attempt to stop her moving away. Once the female cheetah has chosen her partner they will move away from the others. At this sighting it was still early in the procedure as the previous evening the Fast Five were not seen with Nashipai. The process went on the whole day and the separation of the cheetah couple only occurred that night. In this video it is incredible just to witness a small amount of the interaction!
