Rare Black Rhino Spotted In Kenya! | Maasai Mara Safari | Zebra Plains

The black rhino or hook-lipped rhinoceros is classed as critically endangered and in Kenya's Maasai Mara there are less than 50 individuals. The low numbers and relative shyness makes them the least seen of the "Big Five" in the Mara so it was nice to be able to capture one on film!
The black rhino population in Africa numbers around 5000 currently which is almost double the number from the mid 1990's but still an almost 98% dcreas from the 1960's. Black rhinos are easily stressed and reintroduction programmes across Africa initially struggle as the animals often don't adapt to their new surroundings and die or don't breed.
Rhino poaching is an ongoing threat to the population and the main reason for the drastic decline in numbers.
