White Rhinoceros Territorial Clash | Archive Rhino Footage

For "World Rhino Day" I have this intense showdown between two territorial Southern white rhino bulls. Previously seen as just a short clip of the two butting heads this video from 2011 shows the entirety of the sighting. The two massive rhino were careful not to give each other any opening to use the horn. It may seem that not much is happening a lot of the time but both rhinoceros were intently focused and calculating their next move. To witness the focus and concentration of the two rhino bulls as they try to assess their next move is as interesting as the actual moves they do make. The clash continued long after dark and the rhino with the smaller horn ended up claiming the territory and controlling the area for many years afterwards. Watching rhinos fighting for territory is a way to see why they have horns and how de-horning rhino to prevent poaching puts them at a disadvantage. Rhino vs rhino battles would not work without the horns and that could have a negative effect on the long term survival of the species as the strongest genes may not be able to be passed on in areas where de-horning is used. Obviously poaching is worse than de-horning but there are other solutions such as horn devaluation that have less effect on the animal.Show more
