Flaxseed is a plant-based food that is rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as alpha-linolenic acid and lignans. Some people consider it a superfood because its bioactive compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory action, anti-oxidant capacity, and lipid modulating properties that may help fight diseases and inflammations. The effects of flaxseed on parameters of cardiovascular diseases are one of the most studied areas with regard to the health benefits of flaxseed. Due to its high alpha-linolenic acid content, flaxseed can lower circulating trans fats levels and regress atherosclerosis. It also reduces both brachial and central blood pressure and protects the heart from ventricular fibrillation. In an experiment, rats that were placed on a flaxseed supplemented diet prior to and after the induction of myocardial infarction had exhibited smaller infarcts, fewer arrhythmias, and a reduction in left ventricular dilation. Flaxseed supplementation can also be of benefit for pregnant and lactating mothers. Due to the alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed may improve brain development, spatial memory, and aspects of brain function during conditions of neural diseases in offspring. In an experiment, mother rats fed with flaxseed during pregnancy had offspring with heavier brains and contained greater amounts of both alpha-linolenic acid and D-H-A. Dietary fibers, lignans, and omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed are also beneficial in preventing diabetes and diabetes complications for diabetic patients. It has been found that supplementation of the diet of type 2 diabetics with 10 grams of flaxseed powder for a period of 1 month reduced fasting blood glucose by approximately 19.7% and glycated hemoglobin by 15.6%. We would like to hear about your own experience with this topic. Leave a comment. Lastly, remember that it is important to talk to your doctor or other professional before beginning any sort of supplementation or treatments.
