Recently it has been reported that copper exhibits excellent antiviral and antimicrobial properties and it could help control the spread of infectious diseases. People in Ancient Egypt knew this very well! Egyptians mentioned the antimicrobial effects of copper in 2600 BC. They have mined copper and used it to make agricultural tools, and they also used it to sanitize drinking water and wounds. Hippocrates also treated patient's wounds by applying copper compounds. In a study conducted in 2010, copper oxide impregnated masks filtered above 99.85% of aerosolized viruses where challenged with avian influenza and human influenza A virus. Although the mechanisms through which copper inactivates wide range of viruses still need to be deciphered, the capacity of copper ions to render influenza virions, it has been shown that copper ions are able to kill the virions or virus through direct interaction when virions are entrapped in the mask or into a surface of the copper oxide impregnated outer surfaces of the masks. Different studies has shown that copper also inactivates bronchitis virus, poliovirus, herpes simplex virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and influenza viruses. Although at the actual moment, there are less studies that focus on the effect of copper-infused mask as an effective strategy to control the transmission and replication of sars-cov-2, most of researches have studied the effect of copper or copper alloy to influenza virus. Influenza A is another type of coronavirus that causes flu. Just like sars-cov-2, transmission is through direct and indirect contact with respiratory secretions containing virions. This virus survives on a wide range of environmental surfaces, including stainless steel, but copper-based surfaces could reduce its transmission due to copper's ability to rapidly kills the virus. In a study conducted in 2007, 20 microliter of virus was inoculated into copper or stainless stell, about 500,000 virus particles remained infectious after 24 hour incubation on stainless; and after 6 hour incubation on copper, only 500 particles remained viable.
