It is of common knowledge that vitamin D has an essential role in calcium and bone homeostasis and vitamin D can lead to rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. But apart from rickets and osteoporosis, many studies are reporting the association between vitamin D deficiency and immunosuppression, autoimmune disease, diabetes, and depression. Vitamin D recommended intake for adults less than 65 years old is between 600-800 international units a day. For adults older than 65, the recommended intake is at 800-1,000 international units a day. Optimal levels of vitamin D is essential for the immune system to stay balanced. Vitamin D has a regulatory role in modulating both the adaptive and innate immune responses. Vitamin B inhibits B cell proliferation and blocks B cell differentiation and immunoglobulin secretion. Vitamin D also inihibits monocyte production of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1, 6, 8 and 12. There have been multiple studies associating lower levels of vitamin D with increased infection. Tubercolosis patients have been treated with vitamin D through exposure to sunlight before the advent of effective antibiotics. Vitamin D also has protective roles against autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body's own own healthy cells and tissues. Low levels of vitamin D have been reported in many autoimmune diseases, especially lupus and multiple sclerosis. Some research also shows that having optimal vitamin D levels can improve depression, although vitamin D alone isn't likely to resolve depression on its own. Cross-sectional studies have associated inadequate vitamin D levels with increased risk of depression. We would like to hear about your own experience with this topic. Leave a comment.
