Prediabetes is a health condition of hyperglycemia with glycemic parameters above normal, but not still high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is a precursor before the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. The normal fasting blood glucose level is between 70 m-g/d-L to 99 m-g/d-L. While in patients with prediabetes, the blood glucose level is between 110 m-g/d-L and 125 m-g/d-L. This condition occurs when persistent hyperglycemia, causes insulin resistance, in which extra insulin is synthesized by the pancreas, but the function of insulin receptors to allow glucose to enter the cells diminishes. Decreased function of the insulin receptors lead to further hyperglycemia, leading to the development of prediabetes and diabetes type 2. 70% of individuals with prediabetes will develop diabetes mellitus. If this condition is managed appropriately, its progression to diabetes mellitus can be prevented. Prediabetes is associated with low H-D-L cholesterol and high triglycerides, which could increase the risk of macrovascular disease such as heart disease and stroke. Obesity and low physical activity are also major risk factors to prediabetes. Obesity is associated with prediabetes because of obesity has the ability to increase insulin resistance, present in prediabetes and diabetes. Visceral adipose tissue lining the internal organs is an endocrin organ that releases a variety of molecules such as leptin, cytokines, and substrates that contribute to the development of prediabetes. Modifying lifestyle by losing weight and getting regular physical activity can help manage prediabetes and lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
