Zinc is an essential trace element that acts as a coenzyme of more than 100 enzymes and also helps regulate gene expression. Many foods contain high amounts of zinc, such as oysters, poultry products, tofu, pork, lentils, yogurt and mushroom. When absorbed in the intestine, zinc is distributed unequally in different organs and tissues of the body. It is found in most abundant concentrations in the prostate, pancreas, and bone. Aside from its important function in metabolism, zinc helps boost the immune system. The immune system has two mechanisms, the innate and adaptive immunity. In the innate immunity, macrophages, natural killer cells, and polymorphonuclear cells are the first cells to fight against harmful materials and pathogens. While the adaptive immunity involves antibody responses and cell-mediated responses, carried out by B cells and T cells. Both types of immunity requires zinc and the involvement of zinc in the immune system is evidenced by the susceptibility of individuals with moderate zinc deficiency to infections, because the normal development and function of cells of the immune system require adequate amount of zinc. Dietary zinc deficiency leads to lower than normal number of lymphocytes by loss of precursor B cells in mice. Having optimal amount of zinc can help you boost your immune system that will protect your body against any pathogen. During this pandemic, zinc supplementation could be of benefit for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, because zinc also has antiviral properties. A study has found that zinc supplementation was associated with a reduced risk in developing symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Zinc also has a modulatory role in chronic inflammations in several chronic diseases like aging process and neurodegeneration by decreasing oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1-alfa and interleukin 6.
