Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant present in the mitochondria where it helps generate energy necessary for the cells. It is also found in the plasma membranes and lipoproteins, where it acts as an antioxidant that lowers lipid peroxidation of LDL particles. Coenzyme Q10 is present in all tissues of the body, but the highest concentration is observed in the heart, kidneys, liver and muscles. Coenzyme Q10 also has an anti-inflammatory effect, it reduces the activation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells, which leads to reduced synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. During the aging process, the body is not able to synthesize an adequate amount of coenzyme Q10, which leads to further accumulation of reactive oxygen species, lesser energy production in the mitochondria, and increased production of pro-inflammatory mediators in different tissues. Coenzyme Q10 deficiency in aging makes the body more susceptible to chronic infection, which is a common factor of chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimers disease. In a study, administration of coenzyme Q10 in doses ranging from 60 to 500 mg/day for a 1-week to 4-month intervention period significantly decreased production of inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory markers in the elderly with low coenzyme Q10 levels. Coenzyme Q10 supplementation can be of benefit for individuals living with age-related chronic diseases like diabetes. Studies have shown that patients with type 2 diabetes have depleted blood coenzyme Q10 levels. Supplementation with this antioxidant improves glycaemic control and blood lipid levels.
