Leaky gut is a condition in which tight junctions of the intestinal barrier loosen and damaged. This condition is caused by prolonged contact with an environmental contaminant, overconsumption of alcoholic beverages, and unhealthy food choices. It has been reported that autoimmune disease arise due to the underlyng problem of the leaky gut. So how does the leaky gut syndrome cause autoimmune disease? A damaged intestinal barrier allows the passage of toxins, pathogens and undigested food particles into the blood stream and a series of events occurs that results in autoimmune response or food allergies. For example, in the case of diabetes type 1, it has been reported that leaky gut induced dysbiosis causes the passage of gut bacteria into pancreatic lymph nodes, whereby induction of pathogenic T helper cells which contributes to type 1 diabetes. Putting a stop to leaky gut may protect yourself from developing autoimmune disease, and l-glutammine supplementation can be a useful strategy to speed the repair of the intestinal barrier. Glutamine is an amino acid that has been shown to be an essential nutrient for lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, macrophage phagocyte plus secretory activities, and neutrophil bacterial killing. It is also considered one of the most important nutrient for treating leaky gut syndrome because it is the preferred fuel for the intestinal cells. Glutamine is an essential nutrient in maintaining homeostasis and function in intestinal mucosa. Increasing glutamine supplementation improves the intestinal barrier function and improves immune function in the gut.
