Melatonin is a hormone primarily produced by the pineal gland n the brain. It is also known as the sleep hormone because it induces calming effect in the body that helps you fall asleep. It is released at night and signals the body organs at relaxed night mode and lowers the body temperature, therefore, aligning the body clock with the outside world. According to studies the normal production of melatonin at night decreases with age, which is why a lot of older adults have difficulty falling asleep. Aside from aging, melatonin production is also decreased by certain drugs and conditions like Alzheimer's disease and some types of cancer. Taking melatonin by mouth for a short term period can improve sleep in people with sleep problems. In recent years, melatonin has gained interest for its immunomodulatory capacity. In 1926, improved resistance to infectious diseases has been observed in kittens fed for two years with pineal gland extracts from young bulls. Melatonin has been shown to promote a significant increase in the production and activity of innate immunity cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells. Macrophages are phagocytic cells that degrade the pathogens in tissue and release pro-inflammatory molecules to alert the immune system to microbial invasions. Moreover, melatonin has been demonstrated to boost the production of interleukin 10, which is a cytokine that plays a central role in limiting immune response to pathogens, in order to prevent damage to the tissue and maintain normal tissue homeostasis. Impaired interleukin 10 may lead to an overactive immune system and can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases. In addition, melatonin also has antioxidant properties, it is found in high concentrations in mitochondria, where it acts as an antioxidant, which makes this hormone a therapeutic agent that can boost the quality of life, especially in the elderly.
