Apigenin is a flavonoid found in a variety of fruits such as grapefruit and vegetables such as parsley, onions, broccoli, chamomile tea, and parsley. Microglia are the resident immune and phagocytic cells of the brain, which activation has been associated with amyloid plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. In rats, three months supplementation of apigenin has shown improvements in memory and learning deficits, as well as a lowered insoluble concentration of beta-amyloid peptide, which is considered to be the hallmark pathologies that characterize Alzheimer's disease.
