The Grand Bunker of the former Command and Fire Direction Post has been completely renovated in order to house a Museum entirely dedicated to the Atlantic Wall in Normandy.
The Grand bunker was a observation post and would house telemeters to pin point the location of the enemy and relay those coordinates to the Merville-battery, or the other batteries in the area to then lay down artillery support, the Op would see home to 50 German soldiers and 2 officers and had 5 levels.
On June 6 the British & French Commandos did have a look at the position and when they were showered with hand grenades from the top of the bunker, so they made the tactical decision to leave it, because the tower did not really form a treat.
It was not until the 9th June that the Royal Engineers under command of Lieutenant Bob Orrell were ordered to investigate the bunker.
He and two other man made the run to the entrance risking the machine gun ports and set off explosives to blow open the door, the Germans did not really have any interest to defend the position and would give up without a fight.
