N-acetylcysteine or NAC is an antioxidant that has been used as a mucolytic agent for respiratory conditions. Recently, it has been demonstrated to improve the conditions characterized by decrease glutathione synthesis and increased oxidative stress, including HIV infection, cancer, and cigarette smoking. NAC may also have beneficial effects in liver. NAC stimulates glutathione biosynthesis, acts directly as a scavenger of free radicals and promotes detoxification. In a study published in 2010, it has been found to improve liver function in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by an increased levels of fatty acids within the hepatocytes, which is believed to be responsible for the progression from steatosis to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. Thirty patients with non alcoholic fatty liver steatosis were randomly selected to receive either N-acetylcysteine or vitamin C. After 3 months, patients who took NAC for three months, have been found to have a significant decrease of serum alanine aminotransferase after three months, compared to vitamin C.
