Sulforaphane is a compound that is obtained from cruciferous vegetables including broccoli and cabbages. It has been proven to be one of the molecules derived from plants and vegetables that extend lifespan and healthspan for their antioxidant, anti inflammatory, and anti aging properties. Sulforaphane's main mechanism of action, responsible for these properties is NRF2 activation. NRF2 pathway regulates gene expression programs involved in protecting the organism against various electrophilic stressors and oxidative insults from pathologies that are caused by such stresses, such as cancer, diabetes, and strokes. NRF2 activation by sulforaphane is also associated with sulforaphane's neuroprotective effect in brain cells and neurodegenerative diseases. In the central nervous system, sulforaphane decreases neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation is a common feature neurodegenerative diseases. Various stimuli such as pathogens and stress contribute to the activation of pro inflammatory cytokines, which promote neuroinflammation and brain pathologies. Sulforaphane is able to decrease neuroinflammation also by activating NRF2 pathway. NRF2 activation leads to a decreased expression of pro inflammatory markers such as interleukin 6.
