Genistein is a naturally occurring polyphenolic isoflavone that is commonly found in various vegetables such as fava beans and soy beans. Genistein has been shown to exhibit chemoprotective and therapeutic effects on various types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. Genistein has been shown to exert anti cancer effects against ovarian cancer through its hormonal actions. It has been hypothesized that excess stimulation by hormonal factors, especially by ovarian estrogen could result in abnormal proliferation or malignant transformation of cells. Genistein binds to estrogen receptor, which leads to the suppression of estrogen receptor alpha stimulated estrogenic signal mechanisms. Moreover, it also inhibits multiple signaling pathways, especially protein tyrosin kinase or PTK. PTK activation promotes tumor growth and progression to malignancy. The anti cancer effects against ovarian cancer of this isoflavone present in soy beans may explain why Asian population with a high-soy diet has lower incidence of ovarian cancer. According to a case control study in China, a high soy diet consumption has a significant inverse association with ovarian cancer risk.
