Human growth hormone is a single chain polypeptide synthesized in the anterior pituitary gland. It is known as the hormone responsible for inducing growth in nearly every tissue and organ in the body. It also promotes elongation of cartilage and bone, which leads to linear growth. HGH has been found to promote weight loss in abdominal obesity. Abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for several chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. These are conditions associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Abdominally obese individuals have blunted GH secretion, which represent the exponential inverse relationship with the amount of visceral adipose tissue. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that GH replacement therapy in obese individuals and GH deficient individuals improves metabolic parameters and reduces abdominal obesity. After a 5 week treatment in obese women, reduction in body fat mass has been observed. Growth hormone has been reported to inhibit fatty acid synthesis and triglyceride synthesis in fat tissues.
