Aspirin is a common non steroidal anti inflammatory drug that is usually administered to relieve fever and mild to moderate inflammation and pain. Low dose of aspirin has been recommended my physicians as a prophylaxis of thrombotic events such as heart attacks and strokes. Aspirin has also been documented as an effective therapy for neuroinflammation and brain disorders. Neuroinflammation refers to the activation of the nervous system's innate immune system, involved in the progressive neuropathologic process in brain disorders. Neuroinflammation is associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. In Alzheimer's disease, astrocytes and microglia activations lead to production of pro inflammatory substances, which over time may lead to cellular damage and enhance the production of beta amyloid. Aspirin stimulates the endogenous production of anti inflammatory regulatory signals, which reduce inflammatory response, as well as the levels of inflammatory biomarkers, including C reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6.
