L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that acts as a precursor to the catecholamine neurotransmitters including dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is produced in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system. The dopaminergic system plays an essential role in cognitive function, motivation, reward, maternal and reproductive behaviors, as well as motor control. Low brain concentration of dopamine has been considered that major culprit of Parkinson's disease symptoms, especially motor control and cognitive impairment. Motor control is accomplished when the neurons located in the substantia nigra release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is received by the neurons of the basal ganglia. In Parkinson's disease, the neurons of the substantia nigra progressively die, which is why the concentration of dopamine available for neurotransmission is lowered. Enhancing dopamine levels through L tyrosine administration has been found to increase norepinephrine production, including dopamine production and minimize orthostatic hypotension. Three years of L-tyrosine treatment has been shown to improve clinical results and many fewer side effects than with L dopa or dopamine agonists. Tyrosine administration has been shown to have beneficial effect on performing multiple task, the updating and monitoring of working memory and inhibitory control, related to dopamine.
