Sea urchins are minor class of marine invertebrates that have 70 % of genes with a human counterpart. Some urchins do have long lifespan. The red sea urchins can live from 100 to 200 years or more with few signs of aging. Sea urchins are recently being used as models in longevity research in understanding aging and unlocking the secrets of longevity. Aging related processes of sea urchins are different to humans in several aspects. In humans, regeneration and wound healing decline with age but in sea urchins these processes increase with age. Sea urchins are highly regenerative animals at all stages of life. Notch signaling pathway is a highly conserved pathway that facilitates cell to cell communication, which control the fate of cells. This pathway initiates cell differentiation, proliferation, or apoptosis. It has been reported that sea urchins have biological mechanisms that are able to counter cell senescence. The purple sea urchins have an increase expression of notch signaling pathway related genes in the muscle, nerve, and esophageal tissues, which have been reported to retain regenerative potential with age. The lack of age-associated telomere shortening has been observed in both long-lived and short-lived sea urchins. The activation of telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintenance of the length of telomeres, is a mechanism that prevents premature senescence and death.
