Vitamin K2, also known as menaquinone, belongs to the vitamin K group of compounds. Vitamin K can be found mostly in green leafy vegetables, such as parsley, spinach, and kale. Although vitamin K2 is found in different food sources, vitamin K must be taken as supplement, because the vitamin K content of food supply has dropped. Vitamin K2 has various effects that are beneficial to the cardiovascular system. It is essential in preventing the calcificaion of the arteries. The effects of vitamin K2 are mediated by its ability to activate anti calcific protein also known as matrix gamma carboxyglutamate protein or MGP. According to an article published in the Journal of vascular research, low vitamin K2 levels in the body is associated with inadequate activation of MGP, which leads to the accumulation of inactive uncarboxylated MGP at sites of arterial calcification. The inactivated form of MGP is associated with various markers of cardiovascular disease including increased arterial stiffness, vascular and valvular calcification.
