Optimism is a mindset characterized by hope and positive way of thinking. People who are optimistic regarding their future and their life struggles have a better quality of life. They have lesser vulnerability to depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts. They tend to apply better coping strategies that contribute to their lifestyle choices. In a study conducted by Matthews et al. it has been found that three years following menopause, optimistic women had slower progression of atherosclerosis compared to their pessimistic peers. Other studies reveal that optimism is associated with lesser vulnerability to chronic diseases and premature death. Because of the positive effects of optimism, studies have found that it associated with longevity in epidemiologic studies. A research published in 2021 in The Journals of Gerontology has reported that being optimistic continue to confer a survival benefit irrespective of advancing age. Optimism was measured in individuals aged 85 to 90 and 90 to 95 years, all mean optimism scores declined from 85 to 90. Measures of optimism at ages 85 and 90 were significantly associated with improved 5 year survival from age 85 to 90 and 90 to 95, respectively.
