Taurine is a non essential amino acid that is highly present in the eyes. Its exact physiological role is still uncertain but a number of activities have been attributed to taurine such as osmoregulation, antioxidant defense, stress responses and protein stabilization. During the aging process, taurine concentration depletes, which is in turn increases retinal degeneration, as well as mortality and morbidity in elderly. Taurine supplementation may be beneficial in counteracting and preventing age-related alterations in the retina through its ability to reduce oxidative stress as an antioxidant itself. Taurine supplementation has also been demonstrated to improve activities of retinal antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the onset and progression of retinal disorders, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The retina has an elevated oxygen consumption and exposure to sunlight that makes it susceptible to oxidative stress. Excessive oxidative stress leads to alterations that lead to visual impairment.
