Luteolin is a natural flavone that is present in various plants such as celery, broccoli, and cabbages. It is known for its pharmacological activities including its anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-allergy and anti-bacterial effects. Research suggests that luteolin exhibits neuroprotective effects by suppressing neuroinflammatory response in neurodegenerative diseases. Neuroinflammation refers to the inflammation of the neurons. Neuroinflammation is involved in most of the neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and Huntington's disease. Luteolin has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha and cyclooxygenase 2. Tumor necrosis factor alpha or TNF alpha is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a critical role in inflammatory disorders including neuroinflammation. In pathological conditions, TNF alpha is release in large amounts by microglia and astrocytes, which leads to the release of neuroinflammatory signaling involved in the pathogenesis of several neurological disorders, including alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
