Intracranial aneurysm is an abnormal permanent dilation of blood vessel in the brain. Ruptured brain aneurysm occurs when the dilated portion of the blood vessel bleeds into the brain and tissues covering the brain. Ruptured brain aneurysm is highly fatal leading to death. Those who survive live with stroke. Factors that increase the risk of brain aneurysms are age, family history of brain aneurysm, polycystic kidney disease, smoking, and untreated hypertension. In patients with hypertension, treatment with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor or RAAS inhibitor has been reported to reduce the risk of intracranial aneurysm. Renin-angiotensin system is hormone system that regulates blood volume and blood pressure. RAAS inhibitors have been used as a treatment for lowering blood pressure. An analysis of collected data from 2,044 hypertensive patients with intracranial aneurysms seen at 20 medical centers in china has been conducted. It has been found by the researchers that RAAS inhibitors usage was significantly associated with a risk of ruptured intracranial brain aneurysm.
