DHEA stands for dehydroepiandrosterone. It is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. DHEA modulates multiple signaling pathways involved in reducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity, and cellular immunity. In the brain, it has been shown to modulate membrane receptors including N M D A, GABA, sigma receptors, and on calcium ion channels. These effects help regulate neuronal activity and protect hippocampal cells. The hippocampus is a plastic and vulnerable part of the brain that has a major role in learning and memory. Moreover, it has been shown to stimulate growth of new neurons in the hippocampus. Adult male rats were treated with subcutaneous pellets of DHEA, which has increased the number of newly formed cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. It has also prevented the reduction of cells caused by corticosterone. In humans, endogenous DHEA significantly decreased with age and is associated with age-associated cognitive decline and frailty. DHEA has been shown to exert some actions of estrogen for its ability to agonize estrogen receptor beta.
