Is modding a ripped model even considered to be a crime? - rant video

Hello fellow Creatmon Fam members. I've been very confused and receiving mixed information on copyright infringement stuff for modding the base models that others rip from video games to upload online for others to download and upload to say platforms like Second Life. I personally believe it's under fair use in the U.S copyright law to mod a base model's textures and animations if you own a copy of the game that the original model came from. I also believe that a base model without any textures is considered to be a blank slate. I need to know why!
