Astaxanthin is a carotenoid found in various natural sources, including fish, microalgae, plankton, yeast, and shrimp. Astaxanthin has been reported to have many health benefits due to its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Astaxanthin has been demonstrated in preclinical and clinical studies to have potentially beneficial effects on cardiovascular health. Both oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to the initial events of cardiovascular diseases. Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species or RONS are reactive species that cause oxidative stress. Cell membranes are vulnerable to RONS due to their polyunsaturated fatty acids. RONS can trigger the formation of thrombi and the development of atherosclerosis by inducing the peroxidation of membrane lipids and oxidation of low density lipoprotein or L D L. LDL oxidation and lipid peroxidation are key processes of atherosclerosis. An example of RON is peroxynitrite, which induces lipid peroxidation and LDL oxidation. It is neutralized by astaxanthin to form 15-nitroastaxanthin, which is a compound that exhibits antioxidant action. Excessive amounts of RONS can inflict damage on endothelial cells causing an impaired production of nitric oxide in the blood vessels, thereby causing vascular changes and endothelial dysfunction. Astaxanthin scavenges RONS and other reactive species by bonding with them and forming a non-reactive product.
