Bloating is an uncomfortable condition in the body. In bloating there is a continuous sensation of pain in the abdomen. It feels like some gas is trapped inside the belly. It is a very common medical condition. Research studies show that at least 15% of the general population worldwide faces this issue on and off. It is a short-lived medical condition. Most of the time bloating resolves itself without any external intervention needed. Usually, it is due to some unhygienic food intake or a large meal intake. For some people bloating is a chronic issue. And it affects one's quality of life. Gas and bloating in the abdomen can be due to gas-producing foods such as beans, peas, wheat grains, soda, and carbonated drinks. Vegetables such as cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, prunes, and apples also cause gas production in the stomach after digestion. Certain types of alcohol and artificial sweeteners are rich in gas-producing content. So the first step to stop bloating is to identify such foods and avoid consuming them. There are other reasons for bloating such as chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diets with high fiber content, and food poisoning. Bloating can be due to food intolerance such as fructose and lactose intolerance. Milk contains lactose. Lactase is the enzyme that breaks lactose in our gut. In some people, the body doesn't produce enough lactase to break it. It stays undigested inside the gut, producing gas that gets trapped in the abdomen. It causes bloating. So people who are lactose intolerant should avoid consumption of milk. Chronic constipation is one of the most common causes of bloating. Constipation is associated with an inactive lifestyle and a low-fiber diet. Constipation associated with bloating can be reversed by taking high fiber diets. Drinking plentiful water before and during meals is also often recommended. It also relieves symptoms of bloating. Bloating is also caused by swallowed air that gets trapped inside the gut. So keep the mouth closed while eating meals. Fizzy drinks, tea, and coffee also cause bloating. So it is better to avoid such foods. Dehydration is one of the prominent causes of bloating. So drinking plentiful water during meals can prevent bloating. Stasis of the large gut causes constipation and constipation is directly involved in bloating. Hence doing regular exercises can also prevent bloating. Hence adding natural diets such as fruits, vegetables, and fiber containing foods on the menu is safe to prevent recurrent bloating. Lifestyle modification is another much needed intervention that keeps the gut mobile and helps in better digestion. Better digestion never allows bloating.
