Myricetin is a natural flavonol found in plants and plant-derived foods such as wine, honey, berries, fruits, nuts, medicinal plants and vegetables. Myricetin has been found to possess a variety of biological activities such as antibacterial, antiviral, and anti obesity effects. Moreover it has been found to exert cardiovascular protection, protect against neurological damage and protects the liver against potential injuries. Myricetin has been demonstrated to be a promising therapeutic approach in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV. HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus, which is the pathogen that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome that takes 1 million lives annually. Semen is considered as a critical carrier of virus during sexual transmission. In a study published in the Retrovirology journal, myricetin has been demonstrated to inhibit all stages of SEVI-mediated enhancement of HIV-1 infection. The semen contains a proteolytic fragment of prostatic acid phosphatase that has been reported to form aggregated amyloid fibrils known as semen-derived enhancer of virus infection or SEVI. SEVI is effective in capturing H I V virions and promoting viral attachment to the surfaces of the virions. Myricetin has been shown to inhibit all stages of SEVI-mediated enhancement of HIV-1 infection.
