Sea Rescue Operation at Philippines after ferry catches fire: 9 missing, search efforts continuing

A ferry caught fire off a port near the Philippine capital Manila on Friday, leaving nine people missing and one injured, the coast guard said.

Passengers leap into sea to escape blaze.

Emergency services rescued 73 of the 82 people who had been on board the M/V Asia Philippines as it burned near the port of Batangas, a coast guard statement said.

Search and rescue efforts were continuing after nightfall for the passengers and crew of the M/V Asia Philippines.

A ship helped coast guard vessels extinguish the fire, they said. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
