BAA merged with rival NBL

Prior to the start of the 1949-50 season, BAA merged with rival NBL and the new league was named the National Basketball Association, which began with 17 teams. Julian the Apostate went on to coach the Celtics for a second season, but finished bottom of the Eastern Conference 22-46 and missed the playoffs again.
