INFLUENCE - LIKE YOUR BRAIN DOESN’T GROW IN A VACUUM.

The way people grow and expand their thinking is through accumulation. Thinking requires a new idea, plus a committed process, plus testing of the idea, plus brainstorming with others who challenge and improve the idea.

That is EXACTLY the process for influence. To grow your influence, your ideas need to be “road worthy”. If you are brilliant, but none of your ideas are tested you could potentially bring harm to lots of people. If your ideas are fresh and exciting but no one is willing to follow them, they are still not “road worthy”.

To grow your mind and your influence you need to consider ideas from other sources, consider ideas which may be entirely new, “walk the dog” with those ideas and see if you gain buy in.

Finally, you must know the difference between “sheeple” influence and leading leaders. Remember the illustration from yesterday, cliff diving. Several of us went over the cliff, not because we planned to, not because we had a fearless trust in the influence who lead us there, not because it was a good idea we all agreed with, but because we followed like “sheeple” and no one questioned the wisdom or outcome of potential risk. Enron anyone?

Just because people have liked your content and followed your page or profile or podcast is not in itself evidence of the validity or strength of your influence. Bieber has tens of thousands, perhaps millions more followers than I do - so does Ms Cyrus.
