Establishing a framework that will allow blockchains to work together to develop powerful, lasting real-world use cases is one of the most important principles for the blockchain space going forward.

But relying on bridges to connect with other chains has inherent security risks, and a number of recent costly failures have been reported. In fact, where once crypto exchanges were the main point of attack, hackers now appear to have a new favorite target, blockchain bridges.

With Polkadot’s XCM (cross-consensus messaging), a new standard is emerging: one that puts security at the top of the agenda, but without compromising on the importance of making the process seamless and user-friendly.

The first functional iteration of XCM was rolled out in May, allowing parachain partners within Polkadot and Kusama to open up channels and transfer data between each other.

Many of these parachains are already preparing for a new era of interoperability by designing innovative new cross-chain applications and services.

Giving applications the ability to span multiple blockchains allows them to leverage the key features and strengths of each for new interoperable use cases.
