The Levanter (wind) can occur at any time of year but is most prevalent between July and October. When it blows, the warm, moist air from the Med through the Straits and high over the rock. The moisture condenses over the rock to form a long white ‘banner cloud’ that is blown, spectacularly, over the rock in a Westerly direction.
When blowing moderately or strongly, the levant causes heavy swells on the Mediterranean. Usually gentle and damp, the levant frequently brings clouds and rain. When it brings good weather, it is known as the "levant blanc",[1] or "levante calma" in Gibraltar.
