A man will appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court in KwaZulu-Natal today on a charge of kidnapping.

The 29-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon after an incident in a shopping mall in Umhlanga, Brig said. Police spokesman Jay Naicker said.

A 57-year-old grandmother was on the day with her two-year-old grandson in the mall. "She was making a payment when an unknown man picked up her grandson sitting in a trolley and left."

Naicker said the panicked grandmother started running around the mall and calling to her grandson. "She saw a man walking into one of the shops in a security guard uniform with her grandson."

The grandmother grabbed her grandson from the man's arms and immediately reported the incident to the mall's management, after which police were called.

“Durban North police station police officers arrived on the scene and immediately checked the center's CCTV footage. The suspect was identified as a security guard on duty at the center and arrested at the scene. "

A case of kidnapping was filed at Durban North Police Station.

Lieutenant General. Khombinkosi Jula, provincial police commissioner, praised the police officers for their prompt actions.

“We urge parents to always keep an eye on their children, especially during the festive season. At this stage we do not know what the suspect's intentions were, but it just shows that we must be vigilant at all times. ”
