News Born in 1817 in Delhi, Mirza Mughal was the fifth son of Bahadur Shah Zafar. After the death of his elder step-brother in 1856, he became the eldest surviving son of Zafar. Mirza Mughal, for a brief time, became the commander-in-chief of the rebel soldiers in 1857.

New Delhi: Mirza Mughal, as the name very clearly suggests, was a Mughal. He had the blood of his Timurid ancestors in his veins, but not their glory and splendour. Mirza never got the chance to become a Mughal emperor, and the end of his story can be called tragic. His father, the last Mughal Emperor,

Bahadur Shah Zafar had to spend his last years far away from home, in Burma, with the grief of losing his son and grandson in his heart. His involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, along with his son, meant that the British were always going to retaliate. For Mirza, the repercussion proved to be fatal.

Mirza Mughal: The prince who did not become an emperor Sultan Muhammad Zahir ud-din, popularly known as Mirza Mughal, was born in 1817 in Delhi. He was the fifth son of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, and his mother, Sharif-ul-Mahal Sayyidini, came from an aristocratic Sayyid family. After the death of his elder step-brother Mirza Fakhri in 1856, Mirza became the eldest surviving son of Zafar. But by then, the aged Mughal Emperor, who had no power and was merely an ornamental ruler, had been informed by the British East India Company that the title would die with him. At the time, Delhi was not a major centre of Company administration although Company officials controlled the city's finances and courts.

His role in the 1857 rebellion Against Mirza Mughal, the British power in India was a barrier between him and the throne. After the Indian soldiers rebelled against the British officers in Meerut on May 9, 1857, they marched off to Delhi since it was located only 40 miles away and there were no British troops in garrison. The rebel soldiers asked the aged Mughal Emperor to lend his support, and on May 12, Bahadur Shah held his first formal audience after several years.

A few days later, after assessing the situation, Mirza Mughal and some of his brothers petitioned their father to be appointed in charge of the rebel troops. The plea was granted after some hesitation, and Mirza became the commander-in-chief of the army. Zafar was annoyed by the looting and disorder in Delhi, but he gave his public support to the rebellion. On May 16, the sepoys and palace servants killed 52 British. Even though the emperor was against the killings, the princes also seem to have been involved in the act.
