The band theory of solids from a nearly free electron model Video 13 of 13

In this video the electron energy dispersion of simple metals are derived from the free electron model due to perturbations at the Brillioun zone edges. The extended, periodic, and reduced zone band representations are presented. The concept of Fermi surfaces is presented and it is demonstrated that the quantum solutions at the zone boundaries are standing waves, which is consistent with the electron waves diffracting at the zone boundary. This is video 13 of the 13 part series.
